Review by J. Robertson for Fender 15R Frontman Series II Guitar Combo Amp
I got one of these used, expecting a simple clean amp to use with effects pedals.

I don’t know if they’re all like this or just the one I got, but it doesn’t really meet this requirement too well. For a solid state amp, this has very little headroom. The normal (clean) channel gets distorted very quickly.

At 4, the thing is as loud as it’s going to get. 5 is not any louder than 4, but is distorted. 10 is as far as I can tell, not really that different from 5. This is like how some tube amps might be expected to work, but this is not a tube amp and the distortion it produces is not desirable like a tube amp’s distortion.

In an amp like this you use the clean channel because you want to hear the sound from your guitar and pedals unmolested. I don’t expect to crank it to 10 without some incidental distortion, but I’ve played many other amps that could at least not break up at 5 the way this does.

The reverb seems to be either off altogether, or over the top. There seems to be no “sweet spot” to it. In fact, you could say that about most of the controls on this amp.
